Diarrhea for 6 days!

Moms View Message Board: Parenting Discussion: Diarrhea for 6 days!
By Mrsheidi on Thursday, April 17, 2008 - 05:13 pm:

Ugh! Poor guy has had diarrhea off and on for 6 days! He would go 22 hours without a BM and then I have to change him 3 times in one hour. (He still won't go poopy on the potty anyway.)

I'm giving him pedialyte mixed with Gatorade, bananas, applesauce (he won't eat rice or toast) and I just called the doctor. I'm waiting to hear back.

He was out from school on Mon, Tues, but back in school on Wed and today, but he had an accident in school and while I brought my mom with us to McDonald's. I've had to change him 4 times in 2 hours...ugh! On top of it all, I'm sick too with a cold and sore throat. :(

If any of you have other ideas, I'm up for them. I might try the jello mix idea too.

Talk to the doc about an anti-diarrheal med. but check first, since some have aspirin (salycyilic acid) in them. I have used Pepto for my kids without ill effect, but do check with the ped.

I use regular pepto for my kids, but now they have kids pepto without the aspirin!

Oh Heidi, I'm so sorry Conner is feeling so ill. I don't have any other advice, I just wanted to say I hope you are both doing better soon.
((Hugs)) for you both.

Sounds similar to what Natalie had about a month ago. Turned out to be a terrible bout with the stomach flu - diarrhea and random vomiting for about 7 days. She would seem to feel better, then be back at it again. Be fine during the day then up 4-5x/night with diarrhea again. Not sure if it's the same, but BIG HUGS!! I hope he's feeling better soon. Nat won't drink Gatorade and dislikes jello and bananas, too. We did the children's pepto and it didn't help at all. We did tons of toast because that's all she would eat.

What about yogurt? I finally took her in because I was so worried and the ped recommended lots of yogurt to balance out the intestines with all the stuff they were losing with vomiting/diarrhea.
Really hope he's better soon!

Geesh. He still has it. Once I think he's over it, we have a diaper blowout in the evening.

I'll try some more things you guys are suggesting...going on 8 days...doc says the virus that's going around is making it last 10 days. :(

Geez. Hang in there. Only two more days to go.

If you still need ideas for dehydration, I made popsicles out of Gatorade for my little ones when they were sick and would not eat or even drink a thing. That might help a bit.

(Hugs)

Yep- our ped said 7-10 days was standard for this. It was awful! I hope it's over for the little guy soon. It's so misleading because you think they're getting better and then like you said, more poop!! :( Nat would play and then bam, vomit again and be down for the rest of the day, just to start the pattern over the next.

I really hope it ends soon for all of you. BTDT!! It's no fun. Watch out because DH and I both got it from Nat. Not nearly as long lasting, but much more intense while it lasted.
{{HUGS}}to you both!

Has the Diarrhea cleared up? Sorry I'm seeing this a bit late. Just wanted to let you know that Diarrhea can be a sign of constipation, the Diarrhea is overflow from a stool blockage and if you give him anti-diarrhea remedies you can actually make the problem worse. Not saying this is what it is, but this is something we have been going through since January here. My 2-1/2 year old has Diarrhea every day, he may have one solid bowel movement a week. We had an x-ray of his stomach and it showed a large amount of stool in the bowel.

The doctor prescribed some medicine that cleared him out but we have to give him something every day to prevent this from happening again, it's still ongoing and from what I understand is quite common in toddlers.

Hope you have it all under control and he's fine.
