Similac Alimentum

Moms View Message Board: Parenting Discussion: Archive July-December 2003: Similac Alimentum

My ds was recently put on similac alimentum because he is projectile vomiting. They are running some other tests on him this week but for now they wanted us to try the hypoallergenic formula. Ok my question is has anyone else used this. It has the most awful smell in the world also I was using the ready to feed It is so expensive so dh got the powder yesterday and it seems impossible to mix,I cant seem to get lumps out no matter what I do, any advice?

My first advice is see if you qualify for WIC. They will help you out with the formula. Similac powder is always lumpy and you can never get them out. Makes a fussy baby also. You can get the kind that you mix the same amount of water with the formula. I used that with Chad when I had to put him on formula. I bought the gallon of store water and mixed it with the formula. Have you joined the Similac Club(I think it is called Welcome Addition Club)? They will send you coupons and samples. They helped out a lot. My last thing is check out ebay. I use to buy from this person and I emailed them and they had a set price for me that was half of what the store was charging. They are from NY, so it is close and I would do a shipment a week. http://cgi.ebay.com/ws/eBayISAPI.dll?ViewItem&item=2342524235&category=20403 Hope this helps.

First check back with your doc about type of formula. My kids all had big sensitivies, we found that the ready to feed formula settled in their tummies better. Pricy, but cheaper than hospital visits. Also there are some formulas that your doc can write a script for. However, we did the similac, the nutrimagin and found that my children did best on the Carnation Good start ready to feed. It was also very cheap..woo hoo!

BY ALL MEANS SEE ABOUT WIC.

My daughter went on Alimentum at 1 week old because she was constantly crying. The doctors thought she might be lactose intolerant and said this milk might work better. It was wonderful. She went from the worlds crankiest baby to the happiest. But it was super expensive even then (8 years ago this Dec.). I think it was a little over $5 per can. We got WIC and it helped a lot. But there will be times during the month that you run out of milk and have to buy. Or at least there were for us. But either way it's cheaper than buying all the time. I hope it helps your son as well as it did my daughter.

As far as the lumps go....try mixing a little of it with some water in a bowl with a whisk, then pour this mixture into the bottle and fill with water. Makes for more dirty dishes, but usually works.

Well I checked into WIC but we are SLIGHTLY above the income cap, it is 33,465. Stinks it would have been great to get a little help. JC it is now about 8.00 a can. well thanks for all the input I think I will try the wisk thing if not just deal with the 8.00 a can for now.

When I purchaced bottles for Dd the playtex nurser is what we used, they came with a plastic fan like plate that went onto the top of the bottle,as you add the formula it brakes it up a little then you screwed the cap and nipple on what it does is it helps brake up the formula as you shake it. Not sure if this will help or if this is the type bottle you guys are trying but it does work.

We had to use Enfamil Nutramigen for my middle DD. It was $22 for the regular size can. We went through about 2 cans a week at one point. Sensative babies surely can be expensive!! We also didn't qualify for WIC. (((hugs)))

You can mix it in a good processor to get rid of the lumps.
I did try that vile formula, but ended up putting the kids on soy. They were both fine, after having lots of probs with milk based formulas.
