What age to bring this up?

Moms View Message Board: Parenting Discussion: What age to bring this up?

A what age is best to tell girls about their period? I think I was 10. I wondered if that was still a good age since I hear about it starting to happen at a younger age. My oldest dd is only 7, so I think I still have a while. Thanks.

My dd just turned 10 and we covered it all this year. I thought she'd start asking questions at some point but she never wanted to know how babies got into the mother's bellies or when she'd grow breasts or anything. I bought the book "The Care and Keeping of You" (by the American Girl Press and it's great!) and we read it together. I think we covered it at the right age for my dd.

I think about 4th grade is the best age... because a lot of my kids friends started developing in 5th so We had that talk before the end of the school year during 4th grade.

Hope that helps.

My DD (9) was 7 when I explained the basics of the menstrual cycle to her. Much earlier than I had planned, but she happened to walk into the bathroom when I was taking care of business, saw blood and became very concerned. I explained that it was normal and went from there. We've had several discussions since then, including what will happen when her breasts begin to grow. My Mom left that part out and I remember feeling terrified and thinking I had cancer or something when breast buds began to appear. LOL!

We also have the book The Care and Keeping of You thumbsupsmiley

My dd is still only 3 so this hasn't came up with her. But, like Trina, my 10yr. old ds walked into the bathroom by accident and I was changing my "pad". He had lots of questions. So my son knows about puberty for girls, and this also lead to a talk about what he will go though too. :)

Thanks for the advice and book recommendation. And I'm relieved to hear that 4th or 5th grade is still the norm!

Sarah started when she was 11 and I think I told her about basic stuff, when she was about 9-10. I got the book, Growing Up: It's a Girl Thing. First Sarah pored over the book and eventually Emily did, too, when she was about 10.
