Plants that grow like ivy....

but won't take over grass and trees. I'm looking for something to grow along a fence that is about 4 feet tall, that won't die off as mildly colder weather sets in, but that also won't take over everything else.

Any suggestions?

Dutchman's pipe or a climbing hydrangea. I have dutchman's pipe growing on my arbor and it looks like a big green wall. I just planted climbing hydrangeas against my fence, apparently they take a year or two to get established but then they grow quite well. I can send you a picture of the dutchman's pipe if you want it.

Sorry I didn't see you had responded. When/if it stops raining, I will take a picture.
