Me again, backpack

Moms View Message Board: Arts, Crafts, Gardening and Ideas: Me again, backpack

My son really likes a new nick jr. show and I was thinking that the orange backpack the character wears would be a cool Christmas gift. However, they aren't being made (and they'd probably be cheap and overpriced), so I figured, I'd make it for him. It would be that much more special. The problem is that I have no clue how to start. Oh, and I can only sew by hand. I have a sewing machine (mom gave it to me 2 years ago) but I don't have a clue as to how to use it. Should I try to make him the backpack, or should I scour the stores for something similar? If I make it, are there any patterns for backpacks? I keep going back and forth on this.

I think I wouldn't make one from scratch, and I do sew! Do you want it to be functional? Maybe you could buy a backpack and applicate the cutesy stuff (like thee eyes, if it was dora's pack). I don't know the show, but I that is what I would do.

I think I know what show you are talking about and I'd probably try to find an orange Jansport or something similar and then fill it with some play versions of the things that are found in the pack, like one of the action heros with a mini parachute, or a balsawood glider. I only hand sew and I KNOW that a backpack would be beyond my abilities! If I'm off base with the show, of course, this idea won't work at all! :)

Thanks, ladies. I think you're right. I'll start my backpack search now. And yes, Tink, you know exactly what I want to do. I already have a magnifying glass, and a spyglass. I'm now looking for some binoculars and a cheapo watch to use for the video watch.

You might want to try TJ Maxx if there is one near you. All of their backpacks are on clearance and I just got a $40 one for $7.

Thanks, Colette. I'll go there this weekend.
