Cloth diapers

I'm planning on using cloth diapers for my next child(not pregnant yet, just planning ahead). It seems SO much cheaper than disposables and better for the envirnment. Anyways, has anyone made these? How difficult is it? I'm more interested in the fitted type. I've seen a few patterns online and it doesn't look too hard. The only thing I've ever sewed in my life are buttons and I made a dinasaur pillow in 7th grade. lol My grandma gave me a sewing machine, so I figured why not? Also, making the diapers vs. buying them: To buy they are around $10-15 each plus the covers are around $10. To make, only $3.50 per diaper and $$2.50 per cover. Enough said!

I don't know about the fitted type. Are they like underwear, but thicker? Or do they still use pins? Seems like a baby would outgrow them awfully quick. You can buy a pack of 10 prefolded (I believe) at Walmart for probably around $10. Amy would be one to ask about their cost and difficulty using. Her second son used them. I never could get the hang of changing his diaper, it always fell off!! LOL :)

My mom made some of the fitted ones with velcro (she's so creative!). She bought one and made a pattern from it. Too bad they didn't get much use. I used cloth for about three days and said forget it. I couldn't stand it. I think I would invest in the covers, though. Not sure they could be made to be as leak-proof. Check out this link. Natural Baby Company They have great stuff for not too terribly expensive. Good luck. :)

I would think they should be fairly easy to make. I don't know how expensive the fabric would be though. We have a couple of packs that we got from Wal-mart for about $5.00 a pack. I think there were 8 diapers in a pack. We haven't ever used them, but I like having them *just in case*.

They are really cheap at WalMart - I think I paid 10 dollars for a pack of 12? About that much anyway. I used cloth diapers for my middle son, Goosie. I HATED using them, but I had to because we were struggling financially. You have to clean every one out, the smell of the diaper pail was HORRIBLE. Dumping them into the washer was difficult and HEAVY. I just really hated the whole experience. Sorry I am no help in making cloth diapers. I can just tell you that they are inexpensive at WalMart and that you should reconsider using cloth diapers in the first place, LOL :)

Well, I made one of these yesterday. It's not the prettiest thing in the word, but I just wanted to see if I could do it. I'm not making(or going to use)the prefolded kind with pins. These look just like regular diapers and have elastic and velcro.

LOL Amy, I'm planning on using flusable diaper liners. I don't think it would be that bad with those.

Let me just add a note here. It is cheaper to use the cloth ones, IF you stick with them. Also the reason the prefolded ones sell best is they are used with every size. So you will need to make several sizes of diapers to do the type you want. But as for the environmental reason. That is really a bunch of bunk. You end up polluting just as much by washing them, the soap goes into the environment, you use much more water etc. I think there are plenty of reasons to go cloth, but the environmental one doesn't hold water anymore.
