Kernicterus

Moms View Message Board: Parenting Children with Special Needs: Kernicterus

Anyone ever heard of this? I think my son may have a mild form of it which may explain his never-ending sea of neurological problems.... He was very ill as a newborn with severe pathological jaundice. His bilirubin on day 4 in the AM was 26 and he was admitted in the PM and put on triple bank phototherapy. I'm sure his count was much higher by that point. HIs ped was amazed that he didn't have cognitive problems from it. I think he escaped that- but I'm not sure he got off that easily. My other son also had it- but we caught it day 3. He was 19 in the Am and admitted in the PM- at that point- in the NICU- it was 25- right when he got his phototherapy. He was discharged within 24 hrs. Douglas was there for 4 days, discharges and then readmitted the next day for 4 more days.

Yes, I worked with a child who had severe CP because of high bilirubin levels after birth.
I didn't realize that was the cause until many years later.

Check this email out I received from one of the leading experts in kernicterus:

I have forwarded your e-mail to Dr. Vinod Bhutani (neonatologist here in Phila) and to Dr. Steven Shapiro (pediatric neurologist in Richmond). Because I am leaving tomorrow for vacation and am badly over-extended with work, I won't be able to think about your son's problems until September, but then I would will be in touch with you again. In the meantime, I am sure you will hear from one or both of these excellent doctors and experts in the effects of bilirubin in the newborn. More and more we are thinking that there is an overlap with pathologies like ADHD, Tourettes Syndrome, and Sensory Integration Disorder.

Thank you for contacting us with your important information.

Very interesting. I'm going to mention this to my best friend, who's son has Tourettes. She's pretty much figured it started with undiagnosed strep, because that can also happen.
Looking forward to hearing what the other docs say.

Yes, it can. That's called PANDAS.
