How do people hard-boil their eggs. I never can remember from year to year, what I do, and I know last year worked out well. Why didn't I write it down?

So, tell me how you cook hard-boiled eggs! Please!

I put my cold eggs in to cold water and bring to a boil for 2 minutes and then turn off the stove put a lid on it and set the timer for 15 minutes and then run cold water over them and they always perfect then

Thanks, Jewlz, I always forget the timing too, though I always start with cold water. I do, however, take the eggs out of the frig several hours before I cook them, to bring them up to room temperature. Since I started with cold water, I have very few cracked eggs - none last year.

And thanks, Dawn, for asking. Your post reminded me that I have to buy eggs today. My oldest son (now 45) comes up every year on Maundy Thursday specifically to color eggs. I provide the eggs and the space, and he provides the coloring stuff.

Ginny, that is so sweet!! LOL *I* have been the only one interested in coloring eggs in years. But I think Jen may want to come over and do them with me this year. I have much less cracked eggs since I've been putting them in cold water to boil. But do they cook all the way if you stop boiling and just let them sit in the boiled water??

By Jewlz on Sunday, April 9, 2006 - 02:43 pm:

yes they cook all the way thru. the water is still hot and the heat will continue the cooking process. u know the show reading rainbow ? after the kids read a book and have a short oral book report they say u dont have to take my word for it ...lol my point is lol is u dont have to take my word for it here is the url about eggs lol

Egg Hints

I don't do them in a single layer, though! LOL! I put 24 eggs in my 8-qt stockpot and do them all at once! I know last year, they cooked just fine, though! I think it would take too long to only do a single layer, and having to wait for the water to boil multiple times.

I'll be doing 3 dozen, and do half at a time in a large Pyrex dutch oven.

I used cold eggs, cold water, heated them to a good rolling boil, then took them off the heat, covered them and set it for 15 minutes. They turned out perfectly! They whites are cooked and the yokes are yellow. (I always have to try one, right away!)

Unfortunately, we ran out of time to color them tonight. I thought the kids and I could do that tomorrow afternoon, after Gary goes to work! It's not like we need them for a party!
