How aware are your DK's of the war?

Moms View Message Board: The Fox Hole (War-Related Discussion): The Infantry (Parenting During Times of War): How aware are your DK's of the war?

Just thought I'd get the conversation started. How much exposure have they had? How are you handling their questions, if any?

By Karen55 on Friday, March 28, 2003 - 10:41 am:

Mine are totally aware and informed, but of course, they are older. As for their questions, we've been having discussions about it at home, and surprisingly, we are all *almost* of the same opinions.

Thank goodness my son has no clue what is going on.

I try to limit what the 3 younger kids see on TV. My 5 yr old hasn't asked any questions about it, so I'm doing a pretty good job of not exposing him to any of it. They don't need to know anything.
My 14 yr old knows and we have talked about it. I know they talk a little about it in Social Studies, but the school did send home a letter stating the teachers were instructed to only give the kids facts about the war and keep their opinions to themselves. My 2 older boys know how I feel and I try and answer any questions they have. I do allow my 11 yr old to watch the news with me if he's interested. His focus lately has been on contributing items for a care package to a soldier serving in Kuwait (this soldier is a former student of my son's teacher). I HATE that war will now be a part of their childhood. I can remember watching the Gulf war on TV when my oldest was 2 and praying that it would never happen again. :(

My 10yr old and 12yr old know we are at war but they are not watching it on TV. I don't turn the news on when they are home. I hate that I had to instruct them on what to do at school if there is an emergency here.

My 2 are only 6 & 8 I think a little too young to try to understand and tell them too much.

I have heard my DD talking about the war, of what thier teacher has told them in school.

Like I told Dh I don't really know how much they can actually understand at this point, and I don't know how to go about telling them either.

I know it's not the teacher's job, but she knows better ways in telling the kids about the war, and in ways that they can understand it. SO, I just let her tell them.

If my kids come home with any questions, I will try to answer as much as I can with limitations of how much they can understand, (which they haven't asked questions *yet*)
