Moms View Message Board: New to Moms View? Introduce Yourself!: Back Again
By Joan on Saturday, January 10, 2009 - 08:59 am:

Hello, everyone. I used to post on here regularly a few years ago but allowed my membership to lapse and would just browse from time to time. I am a sixty-one year old mother of two sons and grandmother of three grandsons. I look forward to utilizing this board again.

Hi Joan,

Its so great to connect with a mom with adult sons as well as younger children in her life. I often think my older ones are harder because moms can't make adult problems better.

Hi, Linda. My sons are ages twenty-seven and thirty-five; and my grandsons are two, seven, and ten. I was looking over your profile and noticed that you and I have some common interests. I too enjoy reading, gardening, and Bible study and have some expertise in working with the elderly and with special needs children.

Hi Joan,
Great hearing back from you. Have you read anything you loved lately. Most of my recent reading is for the under 18 set. Its interesting though. We've been wading through Tom Swift books -boys books from the early 1900's and Hardy boys. My youngest son is 10. Its a fun age they're still children in every way but the mind and hearts are stretching - flexing their mental and spiritual muscles.

On the Bible Study front - our group just finished a study guide, Growing in Christ Together, that focuses on building church community life. What are you studying this upcoming year?

Garden wise we have 2 feet of snow outside so unless I finally start hydroponics I won't garden until spring (late). Its a short season here in the mountains but one can dream and buy gardening magazines. In the meantime would love to see pictures of yours.

The last book I read was "The Mulberry Tree" by Jude Devereaux, and I read it because a friend had just read it and recommended it to me. I enjoyed it even though it wasn't my usual preferred reading. In recent years I have tended to read a lot of Christian themed books. I really don't much enjoy the same type of book I did when I was younger. Most books recommended to me now either have too much sexual content for my taste or are too complicated. With the other things going on in my life, I prefer easy reading. I find myself even picking up and enjoying some of the books that my ten year old grandson brings home from school. Wonder what that says about me? I am starting to read through the Bible again along with other persons from my church.

The small group I am in from church is completing a series on "The Life-Giving Power of Community." As far as the larger congregation goes, the topic for this month is "Fasting and Prayer." We began a twenty-one day Daniel Fast yesterday.

Right now my flower garden consists of yellow and purple violas, ornamental cabbage and kale, and nandina bushes with lots of red berries. I will see if I can get my son to post some pictures for me when he has time. I am not very computer saavy and have never even attempted to post a picture. Until ten years ago I pretty much resisted doing much of anything that involved the computer. I am really into flower gardening, though, and would love to be able to share some of my pictures with you.

Well, I've got to get off here for now. It will soon be time to pick up two of my grandsons from school.

Hi Joan,

It was fun to get back from all my running around and catch your message. We really are on the same page or in the same book. I've been volunteering in the library at my youngest son's school. Its been great. I really love children's literature and there are actually wonderful books being produced. My youngest loves books of all genres and styles so if I'm willing to read to him when the going gets rough we can get through anything. Last year we even did Eragon and the Eldest. We combine reading at home with a CD or tape of the same book in the car.

The community theme seems to be going on in both our churches. Before we moved here my husband and I were in churches with a strong local community focus. Here local home based groups are just getting started.

There's more snow showers tomorrow so start sending those photos of flowers - its a message of hope in the midst of discussions of ice fishing and snow boarding. If you've stored your photos on CD or on a camera chip downloading is easy as sticking it in your computer. Otherwise sounds like your son is a great resource. Many local drug stores or Walmart will transfer to disc, also those Kodak kiosks can scan from actual photos. Also I think Momsview has some on-line photo resources.

My computer skills are on a need to know basis, learn as I go. When in doubt click help or google it.

Pray for my youngest tomorrow. He has has the first of his 4th grade statewide exams. Focus, an alert mind, concentration, understanding and perserverance are my prayers.

Have a great night.
Linda

Hello, Linda. This will be brief because I'm caring for my two year old grandson this morning. I just wanted to let you know that I said a prayer for your son this morning. My older two grandsons were testing yesterday and will be testing again today. They had reading assessments yesterday and will have math assessments today.

Thanks - prayed for your grandsons. Saw you on the special needs conversation. Should chat about that sometime.

hi there !
Glad you're back on here!

I just said a prayer for your youngest son as well .... those tests, doggone it if they don't put SO much emphasis on them these days .... I'm in FL (which we all know is somewhere around the 47th in the nation in terms of how our kids compare, I'm NOT joking) but for kids who don't test well (my 10yr old in particular) it's REALLY rough ....

All of that to say, I'm praying for your little guy !!!

:}

decided to ammend my previous post ....

JOAN - glad to meet you, even gladder that you're on here, I really enjoy this board and I'm sure you will too.

NORTHCOUNTRYMOM - prayed for your youngest today, let us know (in 3-4months, when the results come in, haha !) how he did on this test. Does he get stressed out about the tests himself ?

I got you both confused in my earlier post, and wanted to correct that myself ...

By Northcountrymom on Saturday, January 17, 2009 - 05:09 pm:

Joan and Harlena,

Thank you for praying for my little guy's tests this past week. He survived and he finished. Two positives. He doesn't know he's stressed - he just says things like school was hard today or he doesn't want to do homework with more zeal than ususal. He gets headaches and is exausted 3 hours early. I cut him homework slack (the school should have done that). I also set up the days so he got tons more sleep. We aren't done yet. 4th grade will have at least 6 more days of standardized tests (Math and Science) between now and June.

By ~harlena on Sunday, January 18, 2009 - 09:59 am:

THE PRAYERS HELPED !!!

Let us know when you need more prayers or shows of support !!!

At least for now, he can relax a bit from those doggone standardized tests !

:}

Wow that is alot of tests! John had english language arts this year.

The teachers were so stressed. I think they are judged by how their kids do in their class. They have been doing practice test in class so they are so prepared.
